Life Lessons and Resolutions

Life Lessons and Resolutions

Wow… it’s been 18 long months since I sat down and wrote a blog post. When people asked me why I stopped? I would typically say things like “Oh, you know, life… I’ve been busy… etc.”

BUT, the truth of the matter is that I 100% became caught in the “comparison game” and it wasn’t healthy. When the house wasn’t “picture perfect” fast enough - when I wasn’t as thin as another girl wearing the same dress - or when I posted a photo that didn’t get the number of “likes” I was hoping for… SO silly, right? I should have been grateful that we BOUGHT a house, that I could twirl in that dress, and that I was able to experience that moment that I decided to share with friends.

Still, I knew it was the truth and removing myself from blogging was the best thing I could have done for my mental health. However, I realized looking back on 2018 that I hardly had any photos from the year. I had photos from Hawaii, my 27th birthday trip to Charleston, and few rainy photos from our 4th wedding anniversary weekend… but no photos from our spontaneous date nights, quick weekend getaways, or our home improvement projects. That is one aspect of blogging that I absolutely love - capturing and recording the memories for years to come.

When it came down to determining my mission for 2019, I knew adding weekly blog posts back to my routine would be part of it. I don’t love the whole “new year, new me” and classic resolutions aspect to this time of the year simply because I, like so many others, end up failing and leaving resolutions by the side of the road.

Instead, I like to have a single mission statement for the year. Part of what made me get wrapped up in the ‘comparison game” back in 2017 was my “perfectionist tendencies.” This gets me in trouble in a variety of ways, especially at work. My amazing manager has always helped me by saying “strive for progress, not perfection.” This simple statement is going to be my 2019 mission statement with one small addition:

“Strive for progress, not perfection… with a grateful heart.”

Cam and I spent the first weekend of 2019 doing a few of our favorite things: singing in the car, brewery hopping, taking Finnigan to the park, exploring…

…and plenty of time for reflecting. I’m excited to be back and I can’t wait to see what this year will bring, imperfections and all. xoxo!
